A Dinner Invitation - June 2, 2015

Revelation 3:20-21 (New Living Translation)

20 “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. 21 Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.

Do you like being invited out for a meal? When I was growing up, going out for a meal, or being invited to someone's home for dinner was something special. As a child, I looked forward to those opportunities. During my college years, I had the chance to travel often to Europe, and I always enjoyed the times spent with relatives and friends dining and conversing for hours on end. As an adult, times such as these are still special to me, and it remains one of my favorite things to do. Ask me out to eat and I will be right there!

In our culture and the many cultures around the world, an invitation to share a meal with someone is the ultimate gesture of hospitality. It is an opportunity for closeness and intimacy. Imagine the many intimate times you have enjoyed, sharing time with loved ones, friends and acquaintances, over a meal, and how good and memorable those times have been in your life.

These words from the Book of Revelation are an invitation from Jesus to everyone, to share time with the Savior. In this passage, Jesus is the one who initiates the relationship, because he is the one who comes to the door of our hearts and calls for us. All that we need to do is accept the invitation. Jesus then looks to future times, and he encourages us to live life victoriously, because in doing so, we will be able to share more intimate times with him, sharing in His kingdom eternally.
