The Least of These - March 18, 2015

Proverbs 31:8-9(New Century Version)
8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves;
defend the rights of all those who have nothing.

9 Speak up and judge fairly,
and defend the rights of the poor and needy."

Matthew 25:34-40(New Living Translation)
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

We are certainly a spoiled and selfish country. Yes, many of us see images like these that "pull on our heart strings", and it might move a few of us to do something about it, but for the most part we see the poor and needy of the world, we look for a moment, and then move on to something else. It's no wonder that we are the most obese country in the world, and to top it off, we throw away more in a day than some eat in a year. If we are to call ourselves Christians, it is time each of us did something personally about the unfortunate in our world.

We need to be motivated to not only feel something for those who are starving and in need, but to also take action on behalf of those God has called us to serve. In addition, take the next step and speak up for those same people. Become a defender of the poor and needy; it is time to find a way to make a contribution each and every day. Become a voice for the "the least of these"!
