"Doing" the Word - March 15, 2015

James 1:22-25(New International Reader's Version)
22 Don't just listen to the word. You fool yourselves if you do that. You must do what it says.

23 Suppose you listen to the word but don't do what it says. Then you are like a man who looks at his face in a mirror. 24 After looking at himself, he leaves. Right away he forgets what he looks like.

25 But suppose you take a good look at the perfect law that gives freedom. You keep looking at it. You don't forget what you've heard, but you do what the law says. Then you will be blessed in what you do.

These days, there are many that proclaim that they are Christians, yet they have no idea what our faith is all about. Every Sunday in many churches, congregants are exposed to the word of God in the oral reading of verses from Bible, yet many go away and forget what was said. Few spend much time "taking in" by studying it and reflecting on what God is trying to say through His word. Theirs can become a very shallow faith, and they are ill-equipped to serve God or handle what life throws at them

We need make sure that we are doing what it takes to become real doers of the word, by consistently reading and studying God's word. If you do not already have that habit, you will be amazed how much the Bible comes alive when you read it. It is a living text, breathing into you the very wisdom and knowledge of God. Each and every time you read it, something new will be revealed to you through the Holy Spirit who instructs you. The word then helps you to step out and serve those around you, instructing them in the truths of the faith.

In time, the word will be your constant companion; you will find yourself joyfully doing things that serve the message of Christ, and when you encounter life's troubles, you will recall how the Spirit has taught you to handle them. So if you don't already, get a Bible, read it, study it, meditate on it, memorize it, then take it to heart and do it. As James says in the verses above, through "just doing it" and serving others, you will be blessed by it.
