What Do You Believe? Why Bother? - August 16, 2014

1 Peter 3:14-16 (New King James Version)
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”[Isaiah 8:12]

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.

You may be wondering why I am focusing on the topic of "what do you believe", rather than on other things in this blog. You might find this a little boring, and it might not be that important to you. The reason I chose to spend time on this is due to a prompting I received by the Holy Spirit. You know, those thoughts or impressions that you feel are from God about what you should do. I learned long ago that when I have those, I need to pay attention and listen to what God is trying to tell me.

Some time ago I became aware that many people were going through the motions of being a Christian. The world around us would choose to ignore what we believe and fight Christianity at any cost. Each and everyday our Judeo-Christian heritage comes under assault and in many cases it is being removed from public places by the secular and politically correct activists.

In many churches today, there are many people going through the motions, and because of lack of knowledge, and of what it truly means to be a Christian, they succumb to false doctrines and liberal interpretations of scripture. These many well meaning believers are ill-equipped to carry on an intelligent defense of the hope that is in them. There are people who may read this blog that may not be certain of what they believe, and this uncertainty can lead dangerous consequences when faced with a growing and oppressive opposition.

My goal is to provide information that will help confirm your faith and equip you to be able to handle yourself when faced with questions from skeptics, or to assist you when you share your faith. It is meant to give you a clearer understanding of what it means to truly be a Christian, to take a look at the basis for the truth of Christianity. Once you examine the doctrines needed to understand, to believe and to uphold, my hope is that you will have a more solid foundation with which to face the future and defend what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

Oh, by the way, if you pay attention to the news at all, you will hear that there are many today in this world that are having to defend their faith in Jesus Christ, and they are being persecuted and even killed for doing so. Such is the case in Iraq and Syria that are being barbarically and systematically murdered by members of ISIS, the Islamic State. Such is also the case in Nigeria at the hands of Boko Haram. And in Pakistan, and Sudan, and Egypt, and North Korea, and China, goes on and on. Someday soon they will come for us who call themselves Christians in the United States. Will you be able to stand up for your faith in Jesus Christ?
