1 First, I want all of you to pray for everyone. Ask God to bless them. Give thanks for them.
2 Pray for kings. Pray for all who are in authority. Pray that we will live peaceful and quiet lives. And pray that we will be godly and holy.
14 Without the guidance of good leaders a nation falls. But many good advisers can save it.
After a very contentious election as the one that has just passed, there is a tendency to be angry, disappointed and discouraged about the outcome, especially when it is not in our favor. I myself felt a bit of disappointment, but I have to also admit that I was far more anxious before the election and the results than now. Although I am concerned that the continued disentergration of our Nation's principles and morals will continue unabated over the next 4 years, as it has over the last 4, I am resigned to believe that God knows what is going on. He is still on the "throne", and Jesus Christ is still the Lord and Savior of the world.
Sometimes things have to get "darker" in the world before the Spirit can do His work and turn the hearts of men and women back to God. We need only remember our conversion after recognizing our sheer "worthlessness" before a holy God, to understand that it is when we are in the depths of sin and despair that we humble ourselves and reach for the One who can save us. So too a nation must sometimes experience judgement and despair before it truly knows it is "One Nation Under God".
The stakes for our Nation are now higher than they have ever been, and since God is always in control, we need to remember that we must follow His direction when it comes to the believer. In Paul's letter to Timothy, we are instructed to pray for the king ( our President) and those in authority (our Congress, Governors, Legislatures and state officials), and pray that we will follow God ourselves and live holy lives as examples to other citizens around us. We need to also pray that those in authority will surround themselves with "good advisers" with which to govern the people.
Yes, we are disappointed; I am disappointed, but we don't need to be discouraged as long as we call upon Jesus as Lord and surrender to God's control. In His love, He will guide us and take care of us, and He will work out everything to our greater good.
