Beautiful People - August 3, 2011

1 Samuel 16:7(New International Version)
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Are you one who would just love to be identified with the beautiful people? Have you ever envisioned yourself taking part in the Academy Awards? Do you long for your chance to walk the red carpet under the adulation of raving fans? Are you mesmorized by seeing your favorite movie stars or favorite sports athelete? Do you fall for the opportunity to participate in events where you can be the hit of society?

We human beings really go over board with heaping praise on what is very superficial. The Academy Awards are an apporpriate illustration of this. Imagine an award ceremony where the attendees vote for their own work and themselves, then give each other awards for it? Can you think of anything as prideful? Yet thousands of people clammer for the chance to see their favorite star walking the red carpet outside of the Kodak Theater. Millions more spend hours watching television to catch a glimpse of the spectacle and hearing these people thanking each other.

In God's economy, these superficial displays are far from what He desires us to be involved in. We may be impressed by the way people look, what they do, and what they have, but God isn't. In the Book of Samuel we read about such a "red carpet" walk of sorts when the prophet Samuel visited the house of Jesse to select the next King of Israel. Jesse had seven of his sons pass before the prophet, thinking that he was looking for the strongest and "most beautiful". But Samuel made it clear that the outward appearance that impressed man did not impress God.

What is most important to God is that you are a beautiful on the inside. He seeks out the condition of the heart when He looks for beautiful people. The most lovely in God's eyes are those who serve Him and others in love, care and compassion, seeking to be obedient to His will.
