Purpose - July 8, 2011

Ecclesiastes 2:22-25(GOD’S WORD Translation)
22What do people get from all of their hard work and struggles under the sun? 23Their entire life is filled with pain, and their work is unbearable. Even at night their minds don’t rest. Even this is pointless.

24There is nothing better for people to do than to eat, drink, and find satisfaction in their work. I saw that even this comes from the hand of God. 25Who can eat or enjoy themselves without God?

For most of us, Friday marks the end of another work week. We have spent forty or more hours working; to what end? For what purpose? Work for the sake of working really has no purpose at all, so our work has to mean something.

The richest man on the planet in his day, King Solomon, asked this question. He wondered why he was doing his work. It frustrated him to think that he would do all this work, only to have someone else to come after him and reap all the reward. After his death, the one who inherited the benefit of Solomon's labor would not appreciate what it took to get there.

What Solomon soon realized was that without God as the focus of our work, the work would have little meaning; it would serve no purpose. God is the one that first enables us to work, He is the One who gives us something to work for, whether it be our families or another, and He is the One who tells us to work as if we are doing it for Him. Our ultimate purpose in our work is to serve our God, and in doing so we serve our families, others and ourselves as well.

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24(NIV)
