Faith of Our Mothers - May 8, 2011

2 Timothy 1:2-6 (New Living Translation)
2 I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.

3 Timothy, I thank God for you—the God I serve with a clear conscience, just as my ancestors did. Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again.

5 I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. 6 This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.

Many of us owe our faith in Jesus Christ to our mothers. Our moms were the first ones that nurtured us, sat with us and read us Bible stories, and encouraged us to grow our belief in God. They are the ones that led us in prayers at our bedside, and taught us to trust God with all things in our lives. They are the ones that we need to honor, and it is because of them that many of us have knowledge of our saving faith.

Paul remembered and honored for all time Timothy's grandmother and mother, who brought their faith in Jesus Christ to him. They were reponsible for helping to ignite the spark of the Holy Spirit, and fanned it into a flame.
It was their strength as Christians that influenced the life of Timothy to serve his Lord.

As we celebrate this Mother's Day, first, Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers around us; next, thank you for helping us to know Jesus. For it has been your faith that has sealed a place for your family with God in Heaven. May your lives be blessed, and may God encourage you, as you raise those whom God has entrusted you with.
