Life is Short - March 11, 2011

Psalm 39:4-6 (GOD’S WORD Translation)

4“Teach me, O Lord, about the end of my life.
Teach me about the number of days I have left
so that I may know how temporary my life is.

5Indeed, you have made the length of my days only a few inches.
My life span is nothing compared to yours.
Certainly, everyone alive is like a whisper in the wind.

6Each person who walks around is like a shadow.
They are busy for no reason.
They accumulate riches without knowing who will get them.”

James 4:13-14 (New International Reader's Version)

13 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city. We will spend a year there. We will buy and sell and make money." 14 You don't even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? It is a mist that appears for a little while. Then it disappears.

On a day like today, after the devastating earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami, you have to take pause and thing about how short life can be. In one moment it could all end for any of us; in one moment it will be either the best of times or too late. We only have one chance in this life to make sure that we have taken care of what comes after. Jesus gave us the way when He said He was "the truth, and the way and the life".

Take a moment and remember those whose lives were cut short. Pray for God's grace and mercy for those who perished, and His comfort for those who are left behind. We do not know this side of heaven why thses things happen, but it is all in vain if we who remain do not get the message of how short life really is. If a disaster would happen where you live and you were involved, would you be ready?
