Romans 12:16 (New Living Translation)
16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!
We have been given a great gift. Because we have been saved through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, we are set apart for God's purposes. This doesn't mean that we gather ourselves up into "holy huddles", waiting for our Lord's return though. It doesn't mean that we associate only with other Christians. And, it doesn't mean that we turn our backs on others, because they can't measure up to the rules we have setup for ourselves and others to meet.
God has only one condition for salvation, and that is that one believes in Jesus Christ as His Son, that gave His life for our sins in our place, and stepped out of the grave to take up His rightful place as God in Heaven. May seem to be a tall order to accept such a thing, but it is quit simple if you really think about it. It is a simple thing called faith. That is all that God has asked us to have.
Unfortunately, as is always the case, man has added other "works" to add to God's gift of salvation. Many Christians have done the same, laying down rules and regulations for membership to a particular church. This is called legalism and it has no place in God's kingdom. Jesus spoke against this same problem with the Jewish leaders of his day. He called them "whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity".
In his ongoing lesson about how to live out the Chritsian life, Paul admonishes us to first live peacefully with each other, and then to not mind getting our hands dirty with normal people. Many might read this and say that he meant this to be applied within the following of believers. In my humble opinion, God would want us to humble ourselves, to be like Jesus, and to work alongside anyone that is in need of His life saving message.
