Galatians 6:2 (New International Version, ©2010)
2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
It has been a tough couple of years in this country. Many have lost jobs and are unemployed. For others, financial pressures has broken up families. The number of people on some type of government assistance is the highest ever, highlighted by the fact that over 45 million are on food-stamps alone. Food pantries are empty and shelters are full. Those who have lost their homes is the worst since the Great Depression, and there are more homeless on our nation's streets than ever before.
To add to this, there is growing spiritual poverty in our country as well. More and more people are lost and have no where to turn to relieve the stresses and pressure of their lives. Depression, anxiety, addiction, compulsive behaviors (over-eating, excessive gambling, spending, etc.) and substance abuse are also soaring. The times are hard but the relief is close to everyone.
It is times like these that the church of Jesus Christ can be at its finest. As believers, we are to be the "hands and feet" of Jesus. We are to be those who provide help and assistance, along with the hope and grace that are available through a commitment to God's gift of Jesus. Our eyes need to be open to opportunities to help, and our hands need to be open to share in the blessings that God has given us.
If someone you know is in need of a helping hand, now is the time for you to be what you have been called to in Christ. Now is the time for you to pick up your brother or sister and let them see Jesus through you.
