Heavenly Focused - January 6, 2011

Colossians 3:1-4 (New Living Translation)
1 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

I love going outdoors after a Spring thunderstorm, when the sun is just peering from behind the darkened clouds. The air is slightly cooled and smells of a an indescribable freshness. The most beautiful thing that you usually see is a rainbow. It reminds me of these verses in Genesis, when God was speaking to Noah:12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth." Genesis 9:12-13(NIV)

A rainbow in the sky reminds us that God is there, watching over us. There is nothing within the control of man that can ever duplicate the majesty of this display. It lets us know that God's power in the Universe is far greater than we can imagine, and it is a reminder that someday, if we have accepted His gift of redemption through Jesus Christ, we can be with Him.

If you are a committed believer in Christ, you are no longer a child of the world. Since you have been bought for a price, through the precious blood of Jesus, you should no longer be focused on the things of the world. Instead your focus needs to be on the things of heaven. Yes, the cares of the world and the opposition of the evil one distract us from what we should be thinking about, but if you will dilligently focus, the Holy Spirit will help you overcome this.

Why should we do this? Someday, everything will be revealed when Jesus Christ returns for those He loves. When He does, we will be able to reap the benefits of the commitments and sacrifices we have made for Him by focusing and following His commands. If you look around the world today, we really have nothing to lose, and eveything to gain. If you have not done so, make this year the one that you surrender everything to Him.
