Godly Conversation - December 2, 2010

Deuteronomy 18:15-19 (The Message)
15-16 God, your God, is going to raise up a prophet for you. God will raise him up from among your kinsmen, a prophet like me. Listen obediently to him. This is what you asked God, your God, for at Horeb on the day you were all gathered at the mountain and said, "We can't hear any more from God, our God; we can't stand seeing any more fire. We'll die!"

17-19 And God said to me, "They're right; they've spoken the truth. I'll raise up for them a prophet like you from their kinsmen. I'll tell him what to say and he will pass on to them everything I command him. And anyone who won't listen to my words spoken by him, I will personally hold responsible.

More than innocence was lost when sin came into the world. It was a huge loss when the man and woman were driven from the Garden. No longer were they able to walk with God. No longer would they be able to spend time with Him face to face and talk with Him. Because of the disobedience and sin of mankind, the entire coversation that God wanted with His beloved creation would have to change.

For awhile God spoke through a chosen few, those who would speak to the people, and for awhile God led the Jewish people in the wilderness as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. But as usual, people complained and grew tired of following God in such a way. So God heard them and decided that He would communicate to them through His chosen prophets, through which God would speak over the generations, proclaiming a future time when God Himself would be among the people as "Emmanuel, God with us".

We have been given direct access to God through our Savior Jesus. God has restored His conversation with mankind through His Son and our high priest, and through His Spirit He provide us with the knowledge and instruction and focuses our hearts towards Him. Now we can speak directly to Him through prayer and hear His voice. No longer would we need prophets or others, because our God has offered to draw close to us.

Hebrews 4:14-16 (New International Reader's Version)
14 We have a great high priest. He has gone up into the heavens. He is Jesus the Son of God. So let us hold firmly to what we say we believe.
15 We have a high priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin. 16 So let us boldly approach the throne of grace. Then we will receive mercy. We will find grace to help us when we need it.

Follow me on my Advent journey as I travel the path that God has prepared for us back to Himself. Follow the path of "the coming" of our Lord and Savior Jesus.
