Bragging About My God - November 22, 2010

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (GOD’S WORD Translation)
23This is what the Lord says:

Don’t let wise people brag about their wisdom.
Don’t let strong people brag about their strength.
Don’t let rich people brag about their riches.

24If they want to brag, they should brag that they understand and know me.

They should brag that I, the Lord, act out of love, righteousness, and justice on the earth.

This kind of bragging pleases me, declares the Lord.

It is interesting what we celebrate in society these days. We lift up atheletes, some politicians, and movie stars. We applaud Oprah and the ladies on "The View". We idolize Elton John, John Mayer, and Taylor Swift, and we immortalize players in Cooperstown and Canton. We honor our war heores and those who have reached the pinnacle in business. We brag on our kids and ourselves, and we do all we can for those around us to know that we are important or we have achieved something special. It seems that we lift up every human and personal achievement we can, but we fail to do so with what is most important.

God celebrates those who are the lowliest among us. He lifts up the poor in spirit, the meek and the persecuted. He applauds those who help others. He idolizes those who carry their cross everday for Him, and He immortalizes those who have sacrificed themselves for His name's sake. He honors thos who have honored Him and those who serve Jesus with unending devotion. He wants our bragging to be about His business and those who strive for the things of God. We are special when we recognize that we are nothing, but He is everything.

I brag on the fact that He has allowed me to gain just a little understanding of Him, and He allows me to understand more and try to get closer to Him everyday. He has had mercy on me and in His grace, He has acted out of love, righteousness, and justice. I brag on my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has given everything for a nothing like me. Can you brag about the same thing as me?
