Psalm 8 (New International Version)
For the director of music. According to gittith.
A psalm of David.
1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
When you consider our place in God's creation, you might wonder, "Why us?" Of all the creatures in this universe that He created, why did God chose us to do such a great work through? I laugh when I hear those who would try to liken us to every other animal on the planet. Even the fact that we might have the heart to be a steward of the rest of creation, and the creatures within it is a "God thing". Tending to His creation was the assignment given the first man.
Why does God love us so? Why did He give us the capacity to return that love, in our actions to others, the praise of our lips, and the thoughts in our prayers? Why did He allow us to return to Him and spend eternity with Him? Why, even when we can be the most vile and evil of creatures can He still forgive us? How can He love us so much that He sacrificed His own Son for us? How could He redeem a sinners like us? Why us?
