God Our Helper - October 16, 2010

Psalm 121 (New International Version)

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD watches over you—
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;

8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Over the last week, we saw a very touching drama and miracle occur in the rescuing of the 33 miners in Chile. What struck me as most significant, was the overt faith of the people, who's President was shown openly kneeling and praying before God and a television audience of millions. It was encouraging to see the demonstration of unity, faithfulness and determination that the Chileans showed to us all.

I imagined that our forefathers exhibited these same character qualities, when they fought to gain our independence and establish our country. I also imagined the same unity was shown by our parents and grandparents as they fought in wars to free oppressed peoples. I remembered that this was how many of us behaved shortly after 9/11, as we came together in faith and belief in an Almighty God, and sought His guidance and help in a time of grief and trouble.

How far we have fallen away as a Nation in such a very short time! We have forgotten God our helper in times of trouble and forgotten that He needs to be welcomed in the good times as well. My challenge for us all is to embody the faith and unity shown by the people of Chile, who for a brief time became an example of a Godly, Christian nation for all nations to follow.

We need to be mindful that no matter the circumstances, our help comes from the Lord. We cannot be a Nation without God, going it alone in our own efforts. We need to always remember that God appointed us to be His beacon of hope for the oppressed, because we trusted Him and founded a country that lifted up His laws and virtues. He expects us who believe in the work of His son Jesus, to be the light of the world, kneeling in humble prayer, and being an example of a Godly, Christian nation for all other nations to follow.
