Chip Off the Old Block - August 19, 2010

3 John 1:4 (New International Version)
4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Proverbs 22:6 (New International Reader's Version)
6 Train a child in the way he should go. When he is old, he will not turn away from it.

Over the years, I have enjoyed watching my children come to faith in Jesus and the exercise that faith in their day-to-day lives. The best thing is that they came to their faith on their own. It didn't take hours of dogma, ritual or confinement in a convent. All that happened was that they were exposed to the Bible and the witness of authentic Christians around them. They chose to believe Jesus when he said that he was "The truth, The way and The life".

There is an old expression that dates back to the 17th century. When a child would follow in the ways of his father, they used to describe that child as a "chip off the old block". For Christian parents, there is no greater joy than to see our children grow and make the decision to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Sure they may have a streak of rebellion, but if they have been exposed to the supernatural life of the One who gave Himself for our sins, the Holy Spirit will touch their hearts and we will have to do very little else but support them.

Thank God for His mercy and grace and the opportunity to share in the joy of their salvation.
