Going Sleeveless - July 23, 2010

Matthew 5:13-16 (New American Standard Bible)
13"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

16"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

If you have the pleasure of living in Texas this time of year, you are in the middle of a steam oven that our good Lord blessed us with. For me there is just enough heat that I do not have to get out of the kitchen, but for others the heat brings on a whole new wave of summertime fashion. You can't go anywhere in this Texas heat without noticing people going around sleeveless in order to stay a little cooler.

It might be okay with the latest summer fashion, but it is not good with our faith as a Christian. When it comes to our faith, as a believer in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, going sleeveless takes on a whole new meaning. If I were to write my intepretation of the message that Jesus was trying to convey in the bible verse above, using summer fashion terms, I think it would go something like this:

"If you call yourself one of my children, a Christian, you need to make it obvious to others around you. You need to walk like me, and talk like me, and treat other people as I would. In other words, you would need to wear your faith on your sleeve. You need to put me on as your fashion statement to the world.

People should easily tell from what you wore, meaning how you behaved in everything you do, that you were one of mine. Anyone would say, "Hey there goes a Christian", just by your dress and your actions.

No one can be a follower of mine, and yet go around sleeveless. Put on my cloak, dress up in my Spirit and show the world that you "wear" me! Then as you go by, I and my Father in heaven will be given all the glory from your fashion statement; what you wear is what you do and who you are."
