The Proverbs: True Wisdom - June 11, 2010

Proverbs 9:9-12 (Contemporary English Version)
9If you have good sense, instruction will help you to have even better sense. And if you live right, education will help you to know even more.

10Respect and obey the LORD! This is the beginning of wisdom. To have understanding, you must know the Holy God.

11I am Wisdom. If you follow me, you will live a long time.

12Good sense is good for you, but if you brag, you hurt yourself.

Proverbs 9:10-11 (Amplified Bible)
10The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding.

11For by me [Wisdom from God] your days shall be multiplied, and the years of your life shall be increased.

All of us can use a little wisdom, but true wisdom comes from God. If we are to live lives worthy of our calling, we must always seek Him without reservation. Many of us lack wisdom because we do not ask for it. We need to continually seek God's wisdom in everything we do, and not rely on our own knowledge of things. If in the busyness of your work week you have failed to take all of your questions to Him, it probably was not as productive as you would have liked.

Read this from Solomon's life, as He asked God for wisdom and understanding: 1 Kings 3:7-12 (New Living Translation)

7 “Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. 8 And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! 9 Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. 11 So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—12 I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!

Next week, try something a little different. Seek Him in prayer over the weekend and dedicate your first few minutes each morning to seeking His wisdom for the week. You will be amazed how much better your next week will be.
