Philippians 4:8 (New International Reader's Version)
8 Finally, my brothers and sisters, always think about what is true. Think about what is noble, right and pure. Think about what is lovely and worthy of respect. If anything is excellent or worthy of praise, think about those kinds of things.
Aren't you worn out and tired of what you may be listening to on the radio, or watching on television or reading and watching on the internet? I mean aren't you tired of all the bickering and anxiety and hate and foolishness you have been hearing about in terms of the state of our nation and the world? Aren't you tired of the Democrats doing this and the Republicans saying that, and no one is listening to each other or us or anyone else? And aren't you tired of turning on the TV and having to hide the screen from your kids, or distracting them from a billboard or poster or bumpersticker? Aren't you tired of being offended every time you turn around? By the end of the week aren't you just ...tired?
I say this weekend take a break from all of it. Turn of the television, unplug the computer, find a place in God's creation to relax or just have fun with the family and get away from it all. Go to church on Sunday, and afterwards go to lunch, and spend a little extra time just getting to spend time with each other again. Find out who everyone is again. Call your mom or your dad, or long lost friend, or brother, or sister, or daughter, or son; maybe your cousin. Who doesn't matter, just spend time recalling the good and lovely things of your world and theirs.
Paul is exhorting us in this verse to really get away from the garbage this world spews at us, and think and reflect on the wonderful and lovely and marvelous of our world. He is trying to get us to focus our attention on what is at the center of God's heart and being,...truth, nobility, righteousness, purity, beauty, respect and absolutely worthy of praise.
Take a break, turn of the bombardment of the negative and hideous and tune in to God for awhile. Your Monday will be much better for it, not to mention that you might just foster a better relationship with those around you. Be blessed by God this weekend, ,,,reflect the face of Jesus to everyone.
