Freedom - March 20, 2010

Romans 6:1-2,12-13,23 (New Living Translation)
1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
...
12 Do not let sin control the way you live do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
...
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

What a wonderful thing living in Jesus Christ can be. No longer do we have to dwell in our past, in our old selves. Everything we were and did in the past has been wiped clean in the eyes of God because of Jesus's work. Then why do some of us seem to do the same old habits over and over again, even though God has forgiven them? How come we don't feel free from them?

That is because in our minds, we are still a "slave" to them. Even though we understand and believe in our hearts that Jesus has died for our sins and freed us from them, it is hard for many of us to believe that the payment is truly enough. It is hard to believe that God has truly forgiven us. It is hard to understand that we can be made right with God without doing something ourselves.

The wonderful fact of the Gospel, the good news that we find in the Bible, is that Jesus was God in the flesh and he gave his life a penalty for our sins. He then stepped out of the grave and went back to his rightful place in heaven. He has given us this wonderful free gift.

To claim it and to truly be freed from the bondage of your sin, you have to truly surrender your life to Jesus. Give your entire self, mind, soul and body to his service. How do you do this? Take the time to sit down, by yourself, seek God in prayer, and just let Him lead your thoughts. Ask Him for help. He will give it to you, but it takes giving it all to Him. Do this until the Holy Spirit confirms in your heart that you are God's.

It takes time, but if you will seek Him in this way every chance you get, it will happen. When you get up, think about how God would want you to spend your day. At work, think about what Jesus would do in each and every circumstance and encounter. And, at the end of the day, ask the Holy Spirit to give you His assurance and comfort that you belong to God. Give up trying to do it alone. Take the time to let God help you and you will truly be set free.
